Grok Bot Mac setup comes down to six moves: grab the right .dmg for your chip, install it, sign in, lock down what the Bot may run locally, tune the Mac-only settings and pin your version.

The desktop app runs on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, according to xAI's Get Started guide.

The heavy lifting happens on a cloud computer, so your MacBook is the cockpit, not the engine.

Below is the order I'd follow, with every menu named the way the docs and the Grok Bot changelog name it.

What the Mac app does, and what it leaves to the cloud

The deployment docs call the desktop and phone apps clients for chat, review and approvals.

Your Bots do the actual work on a hosted computer that runs Linux in the cloud, one per member.

That has two practical effects for a Mac owner.

  • Shutting the lid doesn't stop a running task or routine, per the Grok Bot FAQ.
  • Your Mac's own files and Terminal stay out of reach unless you switch on local execution and approve it.

Keep that split in your head and every setting below makes sense.

Two checks before you download anything

  1. Your plan. Premium, Super and Ultra on The X Subscription include Grok Bot, and the Plus plan doesn't, per Grok Bot on The X Subscription.
  2. Your privacy mode. Grok Bot needs cloud data storage, so accounts on Privacy Mode (Legacy) get prompted to switch to Privacy Mode before they start.

Sort both first and the first launch goes straight to the welcome screen.

Step 1: Pick the build that matches your chip

xAI publishes two macOS installers, both as a .dmg: one for Apple silicon and one for Intel.

Check yours from the Apple menu with About This Mac, or run uname -m in Terminal: arm64 means Apple silicon, x86_64 means Intel.

Then get the installer from one of three places.

  • The Download Grok Bot row on the Grok Bot page of the Cursor dashboard, which installs the app or copies a link you can share.
  • x.ai/bot, where the main Download for macOS button pointed at the Apple silicon build when I checked it on 1 November 2026.
  • The download page, which lists the current installer for every platform and format.

On an Intel Mac, go straight to the download page rather than clicking the big button.

Grabbed the wrong one anyway? Since v0.78.1 (27 October 2026), the Intel version of Grok Bot offers to download the Apple silicon version when it detects an Apple silicon Mac.

Step 2: Install it from Applications, not Downloads

Open the .dmg and drag Grok Bot into your Applications folder.

Don't run it from the mounted disk image or your Downloads folder.

The v0.66.0 release notes say a copy running from a disk image or Downloads now offers Move to Applications, which tells you where xAI expects it to live.

Eject the disk image afterwards so you don't end up with two copies.

Step 3: Sign in and meet your first Bot

Choose Sign in on the welcome screen and finish authentication in your browser.

There's no separate Grok Bot login: it uses your Cursor account, and company SSO works through your normal flow.

If your access comes from a linked SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription, the desktop path is Settings → Usage & Billing, then Get Access with Grok.

After a short intro, the app creates your first Bot, named Grok Bot, and opens a chat with it.

Give it one primary job in that first message and ask it to remember how it should work.

Add more Bots later with + in the sidebar, then Create a Bot.

Step 4: Decide what the Bot may run on your Mac

This is the setting I'd touch before any real task.

Open Settings → Computer → Your computer and find Execution on this computer.

You get three choices: Ask every time, which is the default, Always allow or Never allow.

The approvals and security docs recommend Never allow unless a Bot has a specific reason to touch your local files.

If no desktop is listed yet, the same page shows Execution on Local Computer instead.

The first time a Bot asks for a local command, a card offers Always allow, Allow once, Never and Deny once (Esc).

Pick Allow once while you're learning, because Always allow and Never set the policy for every Bot on the account.

One more detail from v0.71.2: background jobs a Bot starts on your Mac, such as a local server, keep running after the command returns, so check Activity Monitor when you're done.

Step 5: Tune the four Mac-specific settings

  • Hardware security keys. Under Settings → General → Security Key, Use hardware security keys is on by default on macOS, so the Bot's browser can use a YubiKey plugged into your Mac after you approve each use.
  • Hardware acceleration. It's on by default on macOS under General → System; turn it off only if the window flickers or stays blank, then choose Restart Now.
  • Route traffic through this computer. In Settings → Computer, under Your computer, this makes sites see your own connection when they block cloud traffic.
  • Notifications. While you're using the app on macOS, alerts from your own Bots land on the desktop instead of your phone, per the settings docs.

Allow Grok Bot banners in macOS notification settings, or that desktop routing won't kick in.

Step 6: Pin your version and know how updates land

Open the account menu, choose Support, then About, and note the Version.

Copy version info grabs the version, release track and operating system in one click, which is handy for support tickets.

The Mac app checks for updates on its own and offers each one through Restart to Update in the Updates section of settings.

With Automatic Updates on, the default, it also installs a downloaded update while you're away.

You can't switch update checks off on a Mac: no device policy, installer option or dashboard setting does it.

Old builds eventually show Update required across the whole window, so don't sit on an ancient version.

The Mac shortcuts I'd learn on day one

The keyboard shortcuts list uses Cmd on macOS for almost everything.

  • Cmd+K opens the search palette, and since v0.77.0 it moves with Ctrl-N and Ctrl-P on a Mac.
  • Cmd+N creates a new Bot.
  • Cmd+D dictates into the composer while the prompt is focused.
  • Cmd+, opens Settings, and Cmd+/ shows every shortcut.
  • Cmd+Shift+I or Cmd+Alt+B opens conversation details on macOS.
  • Control+Tab cycles Bots, and it stays Control even on a Mac.
  • Control+Cmd+F toggles fullscreen.

Mac fixes buried in the changelog

A handful of release notes only matter if you're on macOS.

  • v0.78.1, 27 Oct: the Intel build offers the Apple silicon build on Apple silicon Macs.
  • v0.71.2, 14 Oct: when a downloaded update is withdrawn, Restart to Update goes away and your current version stays, even when you quit on a Mac.
  • v0.70.2, 11 Oct: View Unread in the View menu filters the sidebar to Bots with unread messages.
  • v0.67.0, 2 Oct: the Back and Forward buttons on Logitech mice work on a Mac.
  • v0.59.0, 25 Sep: a failed update install on macOS is retried instead of leaving you on the old version.

The release feed for darwin-arm64 and darwin-x64 both reported version 0.78.1 when I read them on 1 November 2026.

When the Mac app gets stuck, work in this order

Most setup problems clear after a full quit and reopen.

On a Mac, choose Quit from the menu bar, because closing the window leaves the app running.

  1. If the computer view says Reconnecting, wait and choose Retry.
  2. Quit from the menu bar, reopen, and check for an app update.
  3. Use Update Bot's Computer in Settings → Computer if one is offered.
  4. Choose Recover computer only if it still can't reconnect.
  5. Leave Reset Bot's Computer for last.

The computer docs warn against starting a second Update or Reset while one is already running.

Files that exist only on your Mac aren't covered by Grok Bot's backups, so keep Time Machine or your own backup running.

Rolling it out to a team of Macs

For more than a handful of machines, skip the dashboard link and push the .dmg with the Mac management tool you already run.

The deployment page names Jamf Pro, Kandji and Microsoft Intune.

There's no PKG installer, so wrap the .dmg in your tool's package format if it insists on one.

Pin a tested build with the versioned URL pattern, swapping in the release you want:

https://downloads.cursor.com/grokbot/stable/darwin-arm64/{version}/Grok_Bot_{version}.dmg
https://downloads.cursor.com/grokbot/stable/darwin-x64/{version}/Grok_Bot_{version}_x64.dmg

For scripted packaging, read the current release from the JSON feed:

curl -s https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/api/download/stable/darwin-arm64/sand

Pilot on a few Macs first, sign in, and confirm the app connects to the hosted computer before you push to the fleet.

Allow cursor.com and downloads.cursor.com on your network, since that's where installers and updates come from.

What to do in your first hour

Run one small, low-risk task with the computer preview open in the right-hand panel.

The Get Started guide suggests attaching a document and asking for a five-bullet summary that leaves the source file untouched.

Watch where it clicks, then save anything you'd repeat as a skill.

FAQ: Grok Bot Mac

Does Grok Bot run on Intel Macs?

Yes. xAI ships a separate Intel .dmg alongside the Apple silicon one, and since v0.78.1 the Intel build offers the Apple silicon version if you run it on an Apple silicon Mac.

Where is the version number in the Mac app?

Open the account menu, choose Support, then About. Copy version info copies the version, release track and operating system.

Can I stop the Mac app from updating itself?

No. You can turn off Automatic Updates so updates wait for Restart to Update, but the app still checks for and offers new versions.

Why does closing the window not quit Grok Bot?

On a Mac, closing the window leaves the app running. Choose Quit from the menu bar for a full quit, which is the first troubleshooting step the docs give.

Is there a PKG installer for Jamf or Kandji?

No. The published macOS installer is a .dmg, so wrap it in your management tool's package format if it needs one.
