The best Hermes Agent VPS for most people is the Hostinger KVM 2, because it gives you 2 vCPU and 8GB of RAM for $8.99 a month on its promo price and Hostinger ships a one-click Hermes Agent template.
If you don't want to manage a server at all, Hermes Cloud from Nous Research is my second pick, and Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier is the best free option.
One of my viewers asked me how to set Hermes up on an Oracle VPS, so this post answers that with the real commands.
You'll get the ranked list first, then the full server walkthrough, then the security basics that stop your agent leaking keys.
I checked every price below on each provider's own pricing page on 10 October 2026.
I run Hermes every day on my Mac and I've deployed Hermes Cloud, but I haven't personally run Hermes on every VPS in this list.
That means the VPS ranking is based on published specs, published prices and the official Hermes docs, and I'll tell you where I couldn't verify something.
The Best Hermes Agent VPS: Top 3 At A Glance
- 🥇 Hostinger KVM 2 is the best all-round Hermes Agent VPS, with 2 vCPU, 8GB of RAM and a one-click Hermes template.
- 🥈 Hermes Cloud is the best choice if you never want to SSH into anything, because Nous Research hosts the agent for you.
- 🥉 Oracle Cloud Always Free is the best free server, and it's the one my viewer asked about.
How I Ranked These Hermes Agent VPS Options
I used four tests that any operator can repeat.
The first test is whether the box has enough memory to run Hermes with its browser tools, which I'll explain in the sizing section.
The second test is the real monthly price on the provider's own page today, including the renewal price where one is shown.
The third test is how much setup work stands between you and a working agent.
The fourth test is how painful it is to keep the thing secure and updated for a year.

The 7 Best Hermes Agent VPS And Hosting Options (Ranked)
1. Hostinger KVM 2
Hostinger's KVM 2 plan has 2 vCPU, 8GB of RAM, 100GB of NVMe storage and 8TB of bandwidth.
The Hostinger VPS page showed it at $8.99 a month when I checked on 10 October 2026.
That is a promo rate paid upfront, and the same page listed a renewal price of $14.99 a month, so budget for the renewal.
Hostinger's own Hermes Agent cost guide says its template installs Hermes Agent in one click and recommends at least 2 vCPU and 8GB of RAM for a stable Docker deployment.
The smaller KVM 1 plan has 1 vCPU and 4GB of RAM at $6.49 a month on promo, renewing at $11.99.
Best for: operators who want the least setup on a real server.
Price: $8.99 a month promo, $14.99 a month on renewal, as shown on 10 October 2026.
2. Hermes Cloud (Nous Portal)
Hermes Cloud is the hosted version of Hermes Agent, run by Nous Research, the team that makes Hermes.
You pick a name, a model and a size, and the agent is online on a dedicated instance without you touching a server.
The Standard size has 2GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs and 10 concurrent sessions for $0.51 a day while running.
The Pro size has 4GB of RAM, 4 vCPUs and 20 concurrent sessions for $0.99 a day while running.
A stopped agent costs $0.03 a day for storage, and inference and tool usage are billed on top.
You need a $2 minimum credit balance or an active Nous subscription to deploy one.
I wrote a full walkthrough in my Hermes Cloud guide on agentos.guide.
Best for: people who want an always-on agent with zero server admin.
Price: roughly $15.30 for 30 days of Standard running non-stop, plus model usage.
3. Oracle Cloud Always Free
Oracle's Always Free resources include Arm-based Ampere A1 compute.
Oracle's docs say the free allowance is 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours a month, which they describe as equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12GB of memory for Always Free tenancies.
You also get 200GB of block storage and 10TB of outbound data a month.
Hermes lists Linux on aarch64 as a Tier 1 platform, so the Arm shape is supported.
The catch is that Oracle can reclaim Always Free instances it judges to be idle over a 7-day period, and a quiet agent can look idle.
Best for: anyone who wants a capable server for nothing and is happy to do the setup.
Price: free within the Always Free limits.
4. Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner Cloud is a well-known European cloud provider with data centres in Germany and Finland, plus locations in the US and Singapore.
Its regular performance range lists the CPX12 with 1 vCPU, 2GB of RAM and 40GB of NVMe, and the CPX22 with 2 vCPU, 4GB of RAM and 80GB of NVMe.
The pricing did not load for me on 10 October 2026, so check current pricing on Hetzner's page before you order.
Best for: operators who want their server in a European data centre.
Price: check current pricing.
5. DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean's Basic Droplets are the easiest to understand if you've never rented a server.
The 2GB Droplet with 1 vCPU and 50GB of SSD costs $12 a month.
The 4GB Droplet with 2 vCPUs and 80GB of SSD costs $24 a month.
There is a 1GB Droplet at $6 a month, but I'd treat that as too tight once the browser tools are installed.
Best for: beginners who value a clean dashboard and good tutorials over the lowest price.
Price: $12 a month for 2GB or $24 a month for 4GB, as shown on 10 October 2026.
6. Contabo Cloud VPS
Contabo gives you the most memory for the money on this list.
The Cloud VPS 4 has 4 vCPU, 8GB of RAM and 100GB of SSD from €4.40 a month.
Contabo's page says that figure is the effective monthly rate for a 24-month subscription, so the short-term price is higher.
Best for: people who want lots of RAM cheaply and are happy to commit for two years.
Price: from €4.40 a month on a 24-month term, as shown on 10 October 2026.
7. Vultr
Vultr is a well-known VPS provider with shared CPU cloud compute plans.
Its pricing page blocked my check on 10 October 2026, so I can't give you plan specs or prices that I've seen with my own eyes.
Check current pricing on Vultr's site and compare it to the 2GB and 4GB plans above.
Best for: operators who already have a Vultr account.
Price: check current pricing.

What Size VPS Does Hermes Agent Actually Need?
The size you need depends almost entirely on where the model runs.
Hermes is the harness, and the model is the brain.
If the brain is an API, the server only runs the Hermes process, the gateway and the tools.
The official installation docs don't publish a minimum RAM or CPU figure, and the GitHub README says you can run it on a $5 VPS.
I'd still be careful with 1GB boxes, because the installer adds a browser tool with a pinned Chromium by default.
Nous sizes its own smallest Hermes Cloud instance at 2GB of RAM and 2 vCPUs, and I think that's the most honest floor you'll find.
Hostinger recommends 2 vCPU and 8GB for a Docker deployment, which leaves room for browser automation.
| How you run the model | Server size I'd choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| API model, chat and cron jobs only | 2GB RAM, 1 to 2 vCPU | The server only runs Hermes and the gateway. |
| API model with browser tools | 4GB to 8GB RAM, 2 vCPU | Chromium needs memory on top of Hermes. |
| Local model on the server | A GPU server, not a normal VPS | A CPU-only VPS runs local models far too slowly for agent work. |
A local model on a cheap VPS is the mistake I see people plan most often.
A normal VPS has no GPU, so a model big enough to drive tools well will crawl.
If you want local models, run them on your own machine and read my best Hermes Agent model breakdown first.

How To Set Up Hermes Agent On An Oracle VPS (Step By Step)
This is the answer to my viewer's question, and the same steps work on any Ubuntu VPS from step 3 onwards.
Step 1: Create the Oracle instance
Sign in to the Oracle Cloud console and create a compute instance.
Choose a Canonical Ubuntu image and the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape, then set it to 2 OCPUs and 12GB of memory to stay inside the Always Free allowance.
Oracle also offers two free AMD micro instances, but each has only 1GB of memory, so I'd skip them for Hermes.
Download the SSH key pair when the console offers it, because that key is the only way into the server.
Step 2: Connect over SSH
Copy the public IP address from the instance page and connect from your own computer.
ssh -i ~/.ssh/your-oracle-key.key ubuntu@YOUR_SERVER_IP
The default user on Oracle's Ubuntu images is ubuntu, which is already a non-root user with sudo.
Step 3: Update the server and create a user for the agent
Run the system updates first.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
Then create a separate user that owns the agent and has no sudo rights.
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" hermes
sudo -iu hermes
The Hermes docs say to run the installer as the intended service user, so this is the user you install under.
Step 4: Run the official install script
This is the same one-line installer that Hermes uses on Linux, macOS and WSL2.
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
source ~/.bashrc
The installer clones Hermes into ~/.hermes/hermes-agent, puts the launcher at ~/.local/bin/hermes and sets up its own Python and Node.js.
On a small server you can skip the browser download by adding the --skip-browser flag that the installer supports.
Step 5: Run hermes setup and pick a model
hermes setup
hermes doctor
hermes setup is the full wizard, and hermes doctor tells you what is missing.
If you use Nous Portal, hermes setup --portal logs you in, sets Nous as the provider and turns on the Tool Gateway in one go.
You can change the brain later with hermes model.
Step 6: Connect Telegram through the gateway
Message @BotFather in Telegram, send /newbot, and copy the token it gives you.
Message @userinfobot to get your numeric Telegram user ID.
Then run the gateway wizard on the server.
hermes gateway setup
The wizard asks for the bot token, and you should set TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS to your own user ID.
The gateway denies everyone who isn't on an allowlist or paired by DM, which is exactly what you want on a server.
Telegram uses polling by default, so the server calls out to Telegram and you don't open any inbound port.
Step 7: Run the gateway as a service
hermes gateway install
hermes gateway start
hermes gateway status
Go back to your ubuntu user and enable lingering, so the service keeps running after you log out.
sudo loginctl enable-linger hermes
The Hermes docs also describe a system-scope service with sudo hermes gateway install --system for headless hosts that should come back at boot.
Send your bot a message from your phone, and your agent is now live 24/7.
Step 8: Add private access with Tailscale
If you want to reach the Hermes web dashboard or SSH without exposing anything, put the server on Tailscale.
curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh
sudo tailscale up
Your server then joins your private network, and you can reach it from your laptop or phone without a public port.
I use the same idea to put my Agent OS on my phone, and I explain it in my Tailscale mission control guide.
Security Basics For A Hermes Agent VPS
An agent with terminal access on a public server deserves more care than a blog.
- You should run Hermes as a non-root user with no sudo rights, which is what step 3 sets up.
- You should log in with SSH keys only and never enable password logins.
- You should keep the firewall closed to everything except SSH, and on Oracle that means adding no extra ingress rules to the instance's security list.
- On other providers you can run
sudo ufw allow OpenSSHand thensudo ufw enableto get the same result. - You should never set
GATEWAY_ALLOW_ALL_USERS=true, because the docs say it is not recommended for bots with terminal access. - Your API keys live in
~/.hermes/.env, so keep that file private and never paste keys into a chat. - You should run
hermes updateregularly, andhermes securityruns a supply-chain audit of your plugins and MCP servers. - You should run
hermes backupbefore big changes, because it zips your Hermes home so you can restore it elsewhere withhermes import.

VPS Vs Local Mac Vs Hermes Cloud
| Route | What it costs | What you manage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own VPS | A fixed monthly server bill plus model usage | Updates, security and backups | Operators who want control and a predictable bill |
| Local Mac | No hosting bill | Keeping the machine awake and online | Building, testing and local models |
| Hermes Cloud | $0.51 to $0.99 a day running, plus model usage | Almost nothing | People who want it working today |
I do my building on a Mac, because that's where local models and the desktop tools live.
A server earns its place when you need the agent to answer messages and run scheduled jobs while your laptop is closed.
If you haven't installed Hermes at all yet, start with my one-click Hermes setup walkthrough and the best Hermes Agent setup ranking.
There are also third-party managed hosts, and I covered one of them in my earlier best Hermes VPS post on the AI Profit Boardroom blog.
What Running Hermes On A VPS Really Costs
The server is usually the small part of the bill.
The model is the part that moves.
Nous Portal's free plan costs $0 and gives you free models only, and those free models change over time.
The Plus plan is $20 a month and includes $22 of monthly credits.
So an honest monthly budget is the server price plus whatever your model usage comes to.
On Oracle with a free model, that can genuinely be zero, but free models get rate limited and the free server can be reclaimed.
On Hostinger with a paid plan, you are looking at $8.99 for the server on promo plus your model spend.
I showed a free brain for Hermes in my Solar Mini 4 walkthrough if you want to keep the model cost at zero while you test.
FAQ: Best Hermes Agent VPS
What is the best Hermes Agent VPS?
My pick is the Hostinger KVM 2, which has 2 vCPU and 8GB of RAM at a promo price of $8.99 a month when I checked on 10 October 2026.
Hermes Cloud is the best option without a server, and Oracle Cloud Always Free is the best free option.
How much RAM does Hermes Agent need on a VPS?
The official docs don't publish a minimum, and the README says it can run on a $5 VPS.
I treat 2GB as the floor and 4GB to 8GB as comfortable when the model is an API.
Can I run Hermes Agent on Oracle Cloud for free?
Yes, because the Always Free Arm allowance is enough and Hermes supports Linux on aarch64.
Oracle can reclaim instances it judges to be idle, so keep a backup of your Hermes home.
Do I need to open ports to use Hermes with Telegram?
No, because the Telegram gateway uses polling by default and only makes outbound requests.
Is a VPS better than Hermes Cloud?
A VPS gives you control and a fixed bill, while Hermes Cloud removes the server work and bills by the day.
I'd choose the VPS if you enjoy the terminal and Hermes Cloud if you don't.
