Grok Bot iOS setup takes seven moves: check your iPhone, install from the App Store, sign in, link Grok if that is where your access lives, then tune notifications, approvals and phone permissions.

The iPhone app needs iOS 18 or later, according to the Grok Bot for Mobile docs.

It talks to the same Bots, chats, routines, connectors and shared cloud computer as the desktop app.

So the phone is a remote control, and the work keeps running in the cloud after you lock the screen.

Here is the order I would set it up in, with every menu named the way xAI names it.

If you want a hand choosing what to automate first, book a free SEO strategy session with my team.

What the iPhone app does, and what stays on the desktop

The Get Started guide sums up the phone side in one line: message Bots, watch and take over the computer, approve actions, and pause or resume routines.

Three flows stay on the desktop.

  • Teaching a workflow by demonstration.
  • Testing a routine.
  • Updating or recovering the cloud computer.

If you have not installed the desktop client yet, my Grok Bot Mac setup guide covers that half.

Install both: the desktop does the heavy setup once, and the iPhone handles the daily approvals.

Step 1: Check your iPhone and your plan

Open Settings, then General, then About, and confirm the iOS version reads 18 or higher.

iPads are covered too, from iPadOS 18 up.

Then check your plan on Grok Bot on The X Subscription: Plus is the one tier without Grok Bot, while Premium, Super and Ultra all carry it.

Legacy Cursor plans count too: every paid individual Cursor plan and Cursor Teams include it.

Know which one you hold before you open the app, because the paywall will happily sell you a plan you already own.

Step 2: Install from the App Store and sign in

  1. Get Grok Bot from the App Store listing.
  2. Open it and tap Log In or Sign Up.
  3. Finish Cursor authentication in the browser with the same Cursor account you use on desktop or web.
  4. Return to the app.

There is no separate Grok Bot login, so a second account here means a second, empty workspace.

New users get a first-run tour and pick a first Bot, then the shared computer gets built.

Accounts that already exist skip all that and open on the synced Bot list.

If the phone loops on sign-in, the troubleshooting page says to sign in on desktop first.

Step 3: Link SuperGrok or X Premium+ only if that is your access

Skip this step if you are on The X Subscription, because there is nothing to link there.

If your access comes from SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+, tap Link Grok Account on the access screen.

Sign in to Grok in the browser, come back, and tap Finished Linking? Refresh My Status.

A link you already made on desktop or the web works on the phone with the same Cursor account.

Two gotchas from the Grok Bot FAQ: a link is permanent, and a Cursor plan plus a Grok link do not add together.

Grok Bot uses whichever one grants more weekly usage.

Step 4: Make the right device buzz

Accept the notification prompt during first run, because both iOS permission and the Bot setting must allow an alert.

Then decide per Bot: tap the Bot name at the top of its chat and flip Notifications.

The label under it reads "Get notified when this Bot finishes or is waiting for you".

To silence every Bot on the phone, open the app Settings and turn off Notifications there.

The routing rules in Settings and notifications matter if you also run the Mac or Windows app.

While you are using the desktop app, alerts from your own Bots go to the desktop instead.

Finished replies skip the phone entirely in that window.

When a Bot needs your input, expect the phone ping roughly three minutes later, unless you have opened that Bot by then.

That routing arrived in v0.71.2, per the Grok Bot changelog.

One more caveat: on iPhone, push delivery is rolling out gradually, so test one alert before you trust it.

Step 5: Set Auto Review and Custom Rules from the phone

Auto Review is on by default, and on iPhone the switch lives in the Bot group of Settings, per Approvals, security and privacy.

Leave it on.

Tap Custom Rules in the same group and add the rules you want before the Bot starts real work.

  1. Under When Grok Bot wants to:, describe one action in plain words.
  2. Under It should:, pick Allow automatically or Ask first.
  3. Tap Add Rule.

My starter set is three Ask first rules: sending email to anyone new, posting anywhere public, and anything that spends money.

To change a rule later, tap it, then Save Rule or Delete Rule.

Step 6: Allow the iPhone apps your Bot may touch

A Bot can use some apps on the phone itself, but only in your own chat with a Bot you own inside the Grok Bot app.

Group chats, Slack and shared Bots someone else owns are out.

Open Settings → Connect apps, choose iPhone next to All, and work down the list under This iPhone.

AppWhat the Bot can doLimit worth knowing
CalendarRead, add, change, delete eventsNo edits to repeating events, never invites anyone
ContactsLook people up by nameRead only
LocationRead where the phone isA position, not an address
AlarmsSet an alarm or a timerUp to 24 hours; needs a newer iOS than the app
Reminders (iPhone only)Read, add, change, check off, deleteDefault list unless you name one
Home (iPhone only)Read and change Apple Home accessoriesLocks and garage doors follow your Home rules

Allowed means the permission is on, and Denied means you need Open Settings to flip it in iOS.

Keep Grok Bot open while the Bot works, because it can only reach the phone while the app is in the foreground.

Skip this step and you meet a Grok Bot needs permission card mid-task instead, which holds for five minutes before the Bot moves on.

Step 7: Wire Siri, Shortcuts and the Action Button

The app adds four shortcuts to Siri, Spotlight and the Shortcuts app: List Bots, Send Message, Start Dictation and Start Voice Chat.

On an unlocked iPhone, Start Dictation runs without you opening the app at all.

Its progress shows up in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen as a Live Activity, with cancel and send buttons.

Got an Action Button? Open the iPhone Settings app, tap Action Button, swipe across to Shortcut, then pick Grok Bot > Start Voice Chat.

Press it again while you are on the line to hang up.

Feeding the Bot photos, HEIC shots and files

The share sheet is the fastest input on iPhone.

From Photos, Files or Safari, tap Share, choose Grok Bot, pick a chat and tap Attach.

The item lands in that chat composer, so add one line of instruction before you send.

HEIC and HEIF photos straight off the iPhone camera show as images since v0.54.0, per the changelog.

The files and results page sets the limits.

  • 20 attachments per message.
  • Images up to 25 MB each and 200 MB per message.
  • Documents and audio up to 250 MB each.
  • Video up to 1 GB each.

Answering approval cards without guessing

On the phone, tap a card to see the full request and every button before you answer.

Allow once runs it now, Always allow saves a rule, and Deny stops it until your next message.

Cards from a chat wait for you; cards raised by a routine or background work expire after 30 minutes.

When the Bot prepares an email or Slack message, you get an editable draft with Send or Discard.

If the Bot hits a password, a two-factor code or a CAPTCHA, open the computer, take over, and tap I'm done to hand it back.

Routines, pages and the Library on a small screen

Open a Bot profile to see its routines with schedule, next run, instruction and Run history.

Use Active to pause one, swipe to delete, and Edit routine to change it through chat.

Pages open from their card, and the Bot Library files them under Today, This week and Older.

Pages need app version 1.14.0 or later on the phone, so update from the App Store if you do not see them.

The gotchas I would check first

  • No alerts: check iOS permission, the Bot switch, and whether the desktop app is soaking them up.
  • Bot can't use the phone: keep the app open and ask from your own chat with your own Bot.
  • Alarms missing: your iOS is older than alarms need, so the row never appears under This iPhone.
  • Old version: tap Update Grok Bot to pull the new build from the App Store.
  • Bug report: Settings, then Send Feedback, and include the version and platform iOS.

Billing from the phone without paying twice

If your account already includes Grok Bot, do not buy anything in the app.

If it does not, the paywall sells monthly individual plans through the App Store, and Apple handles that subscription.

Yearly billing, Teams and Enterprise only come through the web.

Cancel or change an Apple plan in Apple ID → Subscriptions, and do it before an App Store trial ends if you do not want it to convert.

FAQ: Grok Bot iOS

What iOS version does the Grok Bot app need?

iOS 18 or later on iPhone. The same app runs on iPad with iPadOS 18 or later.

Do I need a separate login for the iPhone app?

No. Sign in with the same Cursor account you use on desktop. Grok Bot has no separate login, and a different account gives you a different, empty workspace.

Why does my phone not buzz when a Bot finishes?

While you use the Mac or Windows app, finished replies go to the desktop and skip the phone. Push delivery on iPhone is also rolling out gradually.

Can the Bot control my Apple Home accessories?

Yes, on iPhone only, in your own chat with a Bot you own. Locks, garage doors and security systems follow the same approval rules as other Home changes.

Can I test a routine from my iPhone?

No. You can pause, resume, edit through chat and delete routines on the phone, but testing one needs the desktop app.
