The Grok Bot free trial is real in the docs, but the newest release may show you a different screen, so start by reading what your own app offers.
The Grok Bot FAQ still describes a trial on 3 November 2026: a usage credit, a 7-day window, a Start Trial button and a Cancel Trial button.
The Grok Bot changelog entry for v0.78.1, dated 27 October, says the app now offers Get Grok Bot with a unified plan where it used to offer the trial.
Both are official, so this walkthrough covers each path and tells you what to click on whichever screen you land on.

Two official answers, one decision: check your access screen
Here is the conflict in plain terms.
- The docs: some accounts can try Grok Bot before paying, through Start Trial on the access screen.
- The changelog: since v0.78.1, places that offered a free trial now show Get Grok Bot and See Unified Plans.
The FAQ page was still live with the trial wording when I read it on 3 November.
So neither source cancels the other yet, and your account decides which one you see.
Open the app, sign in, and look at the access screen before you plan anything else.
If Start Trial is there, follow steps 1 to 5 below.
If you only see Get Grok Bot or See Unified Plans, skip to the section on that screen near the end.
Step 1: Install the app and sign in with your Cursor account
The Get Started guide says Grok Bot uses your Cursor account and has no separate login.
Desktop builds run on macOS, Windows and Linux, and you can grab the installer from x.ai/bot or the Cursor dashboard.
Choose Sign in on the welcome screen and finish authentication in the browser.
Company accounts go through their normal single sign-on flow.
Do this on desktop first, because the trial cancel path and the usage meter both live under desktop settings.
Step 2: Press Start Trial and know what it really is
The trial is a usage credit with a 7-day window on top.
The FAQ states that it never turns into a paid plan.
That matters: when the credit or the window runs out, nothing upgrades you behind your back.
The credit drains by how much work your agents do, measured in agent steps and tokens.
It does not count the messages you send, so one short message that kicks off a long job can cost more than twenty quick questions.
Used credit is not restored, and one big task can burn all of it.
Step 3: Scope your first tasks small
I would treat the trial credit like a test budget for three or four narrow jobs, not one huge project.
Good first tasks are short and checkable.
- Summarise one document you already have and list the open questions.
- Draft one email reply from a thread you paste in.
- Check one web page and report three facts with links.
Bad first tasks are open-ended ones like "research my whole market" or "build me a full site".
Those can drain the credit before you learn anything about how the Bot behaves.
Write the scope into the first message: what to do, what to skip, and when to stop and ask you.
Step 4: Watch the meter after every job
The FAQ tells you to check usage on the plan screen before large or long jobs.
On desktop that is Settings → Usage & Billing.
The settings docs say that pane shows weekly included usage and on-demand usage for eligible accounts, and the account menu can show weekly usage at a glance.
Check it after each of your first few tasks.
You will quickly see which kinds of jobs are cheap and which ones eat steps.
Also note the day you pressed Start Trial, because the 7-day window runs whether you use the credit or not.

Step 5: Use Cancel Trial only if you are done
Cancel Trial shows up on free-plan accounts.
There is no charge to cancel.
On desktop it sits in Settings → Usage & Billing, and on iPhone and Android it sits in Settings → Usage.
Pressing it wipes whatever trial credit you had left.
You also cannot start the trial a second time afterwards.
So the gotcha is simple: cancelling gains you nothing on a free plan unless you want the account clean, and it costs you the rest of the credit for good.
The cancel button itself is not new: the changelog lists Cancel Trial in Usage & Billing back in v0.18.0.
On a paid plan or Teams seat, the trial closes itself
If you move to a paid plan or get a Teams seat while a trial is running, the FAQ says the trial ends on its own.
You do not need to press anything.
Under The X Subscription, the plan page lists Premium, Super and Ultra as the plans that include Grok Bot.
Plus does not include it.
On those plans, Grok Bot draws from the weekly shared pool across Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor.
New customers start on The X Subscription, according to the same page.
The App Store trial is a separate thing that Apple runs
This is the trap I would warn every operator about.
A free trial you start inside the iPhone app is an App Store intro offer, not the usage-credit trial.
Apple runs it, and it turns into a paid Apple subscription unless you cancel before it ends.
To stop it, open Apple ID → Subscriptions on the phone.
The mobile docs add that Cursor cannot cancel an in-app plan for you or refund it, so billing questions go to Apple.
The phone app also sells only monthly individual plans; yearly billing, Teams and Enterprise go through cursor.com.
My full iPhone walkthrough is in the Grok Bot iOS setup guide if you want the rest of the phone side.
Android has no in-app trial at all
The mobile docs are blunt: Android has no in-app trial.
Google Play handles any in-app subscription you buy there, under Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions in the Google Play app.
If you are on Android and want to test before paying, claim the usage-credit trial on desktop or web if your access screen offers it.
The mobile page says that trial is separate from anything in the store.
The referral route: a 2-week trial of Premium
There is a third trial in the docs, and it comes from a friend.
The referral program page says people invited with a referral link get a 2-week free trial of Premium.
Unlike the usage-credit trial, this one asks for a credit card at signup.
The friend gets a reminder 7 days before the first charge so they have time to cancel.
App Store and Google Play purchases do not count for referrals, so the friend has to start from the link.
The person who referred them needs a paid Premium, Super or Ultra plan and gets a usage reset once the friend becomes a paid subscriber.
Enterprise admins: start a team trial from the dashboard
Enterprise has its own trial flow, and it is admin-led.
Per the v0.33.0 changelog, a team's Grok Bot trial is started by Enterprise admins from the dashboard, and the end date appears in Bot settings.
From v0.37.0, admins see how many days are left on the dashboard Overview.
The FAQ adds that on Cursor Enterprise an admin enables Grok Bot for the team through the Cursor account team.
So if you work inside a company, ask your admin before you press anything yourself.

If your screen says Get Grok Bot instead
This is the v0.78.1 path.
The app replaced the trial offer with Get Grok Bot on a unified plan, and a See Unified Plans link.
That points you at The X Subscription plans, where Premium, Super and Ultra include Grok Bot.
If you already hold one of those plans, or a SuperGrok or X Premium+ link, sign in with that account first.
The get-started docs say the access screen on iPhone and Android offers Link Grok Account, and desktop offers Get Access with Grok under Usage & Billing.
Do not buy a plan from the paywall until you have checked what your existing accounts already grant.
Do not confuse it with the "Try it, don't pay for it" template
The same v0.78.1 release added a template called "Try it, don't pay for it".
That template starts a free trial of some other service for you, then cancels it or reminds you before it bills.
It has nothing to do with the Grok Bot trial itself.
It ships next to two related templates: "Find unused subscriptions" and "Watch subscription prices".
The changelog says Bots confirm with you before changing anything, and I would still add an Ask first rule before letting one touch a real account.
My checklist for the first seven days
- Day 1: sign in on desktop, read the access screen, and press Start Trial if it is there.
- Day 1: write the trial start date in your calendar.
- Days 1 to 3: run three small, scoped tasks and check Usage & Billing after each one.
- Day 4: decide which one job is worth repeating every week.
- Days 5 to 7: run that job again with tighter instructions and compare the meter.
- Day 7: choose a plan by name, or let the trial lapse; it will not convert on its own.
If you started any App Store trial on the iPhone along the way, cancel it in Apple ID → Subscriptions before it renews, unless you mean to keep it.

FAQ: Grok Bot Free Trial
Where do I find Start Trial in Grok Bot?
On the access screen after you sign in, if your account is offered one. Since v0.78.1 some accounts see Get Grok Bot and See Unified Plans there instead, so check what your own app shows.
Does the Grok Bot trial charge me when it ends?
No. The FAQ says the usage-credit trial never turns into a paid plan. An App Store trial on the iPhone is different and converts unless you cancel it through Apple.
What uses up the trial credit?
Agent steps and tokens, not the number of messages. One big task can use all of it, and used credit is not restored.
Can I restart the trial after pressing Cancel Trial?
No. Cancel Trial removes the remaining credit and you cannot start the trial again.
Why does my Android app show no trial?
The mobile docs say Android has no in-app trial. Claim the usage-credit trial on desktop or web if your access screen offers it.
