The top SEO professionals 2026 has given us so far are, in my ranking, me (Julian Goldie), Mike King, Kevin Indig, Rand Fishkin, Glenn Gabe, Barry Schwartz, Dan Petrovic, Britney Muller and Crystal Carter.

I'll be honest with you before you read another line.

This is my own list on my own site, so I've put myself at number one, and you should judge the evidence instead of trusting the order.

I ranked everyone by one thing, which is what they actually shipped, published or presented in 2025 and 2026.

A long career is great, but this page is about who is doing useful work on AI search, AI Mode, agents and update analysis right now.

Every fact about another person has a date and a source you can open yourself.

Top SEO Professionals 2026: The Top 3 At A Glance

This section gives you the answer in ten seconds.

  • 🥇 Julian Goldie is my pick if you want an AI agent pipeline that researches, writes and publishes SEO content with real Search Console receipts.
  • 🥈 Mike King (iPullRank) is the person to study if you want to understand how AI Mode picks passages and builds hidden queries.
  • 🥉 Kevin Indig (Growth Memo) is the best source if you want to see how real people behave inside AI Mode.

The other six are just as useful, and each one covers a different part of what changed this year.

How I Ranked The Top SEO Professionals For 2026

I used four tests, and you can run the same tests on anyone I've missed.

  • The first test is recency, so the work had to come out in 2025 or 2026.
  • The second test is proof, so there had to be a dated page, talk or study that I could open and read.
  • The third test is usefulness, so an operator had to be able to act on the work this month.
  • The fourth test is relevance to the new search stack, which means AI Overviews, AI Mode, answer engines, agents and Google's update cycle.

I left out anyone whose 2025 or 2026 work I couldn't confirm at the source.

I also kept every third-party entry to neutral facts, because this page is a reading list and not a review of anyone's character.

The 9 Top SEO Professionals Of 2026 (Ranked By What They Shipped)

1. Julian Goldie — Agent OS SEO pipeline

I'm Julian Goldie, and I've been doing SEO for over a decade.

In mid-2025 I shifted my focus from SEO tactics to AI agents that do the SEO for you.

That is how I built the Agent Operating System, which is a dashboard that runs a crew of AI agents under one shared memory.

Its SEO pipeline has four stages, which are research, generate, deploy and history.

The research stage pulls real Google Search Console data, and the generate stage writes each article from a real video transcript so nothing is invented.

I published the receipts in my guide on ranking number one with Claude AI SEO.

That guide shows a brand new page reaching page one of Google in 14 hours.

It also shows 4,310 clicks and 122,674 impressions over 90 days in Search Console.

On 19 August 2026 I published a full breakdown of the Google August 2026 spam update, one day after the rollout started.

That breakdown includes Search Console data for a site my agents publish, with 29.8K clicks and 1.22M impressions over 16 months.

I also run GoldieBench, a leaderboard that scores AI models on one-shot builds, so I know which models to trust with agent work.

Best for: Operators who want agents to do the repetitive SEO work while a person checks quality.

How to work with me: Book a free SEO strategy session or join the SEO Elite Circle.

2. Mike King — iPullRank

Mike King is the founder and CEO of iPullRank, the agency behind the Relevance Engineering framework.

In July 2025 he ran an AI Mode webinar with Andrea Volpini of WordLift, and iPullRank published the recap on 3 July 2025.

The session covered query fan-out, which is how AI Mode creates extra hidden searches from your one question.

It also covered why passages now matter more than whole pages.

He built a tool called Qforia that simulates those synthetic queries.

On 31 July 2026, Profound announced that iPullRank had been named a Profound Agency Partner.

Best for: Technical teams who want to engineer content for AI retrieval.

How to learn from him: Read the AI Mode recap first, then try the fan-out idea on one of your own pages.

3. Kevin Indig — Growth Memo

Kevin Indig writes Growth Memo, a newsletter about search and growth.

On 6 October 2025 he and Amanda Johnson published an AI Mode user behaviour study built on 250 recorded sessions.

Search Engine Journal's coverage says the study used 37 participants across seven search tasks.

The headline pattern was that people read the AI Mode answer and rarely click out.

On 24 June 2026 he published a summary of his 2026 Growth Memo research.

Best for: Anyone who needs evidence about user behaviour before changing their content plan.

How to learn from him: Subscribe to Growth Memo and read the AI Mode study before you plan next quarter.

4. Rand Fishkin — SparkToro

Rand Fishkin co-founded Moz and now runs SparkToro, an audience research tool.

On 28 January 2026 he published research with Patrick O'Donnell of Gumshoe.ai on how consistent AI brand recommendations are.

The study had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, which produced 2,961 responses.

The finding was that the tools returned the same list of brands less than one time in a hundred.

His conclusion was that how often your brand shows up across many answers is a fair metric, while a single ranking position is not.

Best for: Operators deciding how to measure AI visibility without fooling themselves.

How to learn from him: Read the January 2026 research post on the SparkToro blog.

5. Glenn Gabe — GSQi

Glenn Gabe is the president of G-Squared Interactive, and he publishes detailed update analysis on the GSQi blog.

On 10 June 2026 he published his findings from the May 2026 broad core update.

On 31 August 2026 he published case studies from the August 2026 spam update.

On 13 August 2026 he published a guide to finding and organising AI Mode queries.

Best for: Site owners who have seen a traffic change and want case-study level analysis.

How to learn from him: Read his latest update post whenever Google confirms a rollout.

6. Barry Schwartz — Search Engine Roundtable

Barry Schwartz founded Search Engine Roundtable in 2003, and he still publishes there every day.

He reported the March 2026 core update on 27 March 2026, which was the first core update of the year.

On 8 October 2026 he reported that the September 2026 spam update had finished rolling out.

He also publishes a daily search forum recap, so you can catch up in a few minutes.

Best for: Staying current on Google changes on the day they happen.

How to learn from him: Check the site when a rollout starts and when it ends.

7. Dan Petrovic — DEJAN

Dan Petrovic is the managing director of DEJAN, an AI and SEO company in Brisbane.

On 28 May 2025 he published "AI Mode Internals", which reverse-engineers how Google's AI Mode works.

His post found that AI Mode behaves a lot like Gemini, and it looks at the tools the system can call.

He has kept publishing experiments on query fan-out and grounding since then.

His findings come from his own testing, so I treat them as strong hypotheses to check and not as Google documentation.

Best for: People who like to see the machinery behind AI search.

How to learn from him: Read "AI Mode Internals" and then browse the newer DEJAN posts.

8. Britney Muller — AI educator

Britney Muller is an AI educator and advisor who came up through SEO.

On 24 September 2025 she gave the SEO keynote at brightonSEO San Diego.

The talk was called "Stop talking about AI, start using it: A marketer's playbook".

She also teaches a course called Actionable AI for Marketers on Maven.

Best for: Marketers who want to understand how language models work in plain English.

How to learn from her: Watch her talks and look at her course if you want structured lessons.

9. Crystal Carter — Wix

Crystal Carter is Head of SEO Communications at Wix.

Wix announced its AI Visibility Overview on 16 July 2025, which shows site owners how their brand appears in AI answers.

She co-hosted the Wix webinar "Optimizing for AI Visibility on Wix" with Einat Hoobian-Seybold, which Wix published on 4 August 2025.

You can find her work on the Wix SEO Learning Hub.

Best for: Small business owners who want AI search explained without jargon.

How to learn from her: Start with the AI visibility webinar on the Wix SEO Learning Hub.

What Changed In SEO In 2026

You need this context, because it explains why the list looks different from a career list.

The first change is that AI answers now sit on top of normal results.

AI Overviews and AI Mode answer many questions directly, so a page can be used as a source without getting the click.

The second change is the pace of Google's updates.

Google ran spam updates in March, June, August and September 2026, and it ran core updates in March and May.

In 2025 there was only one spam update all year, which I covered in my August breakdown.

The third change is how visibility gets measured.

Rand Fishkin's January 2026 research shows that AI tools rarely give the same list twice, so one screenshot of an answer proves very little.

The fourth change is that agents now do real SEO work.

My own pipeline researches, drafts and deploys pages, and a person still checks each one before it goes live.

The names for all of this vary, and you'll hear AEO for answer engine optimisation and GEO for generative engine optimisation.

I explain my own answer-first setup in my post on the king of AEO.

How To Follow The Top SEO Professionals Of 2026 As An Operator

Following nine people sounds like a lot of reading, so here's the system I'd use.

Step 1: Pick one person per job

You need one news source, one update analyst and one AI search researcher.

Barry Schwartz covers the news, Glenn Gabe covers the analysis, and Mike King or Kevin Indig covers the research.

Step 2: Set a weekly 30-minute review

Put half an hour in your calendar each week to read what those three published.

Write down one action for your own site each time, even if the action is small.

Step 3: Let an agent do the monitoring

An agent can check the feeds for you and summarise what changed.

In my Agent OS, one agent watches for confirmed Google updates and compares my Search Console clicks before and after.

If you haven't set up an agent yet, my guide on setting up Hermes Agent in one click is the easiest starting point.

Step 4: Test one idea on one page

Take one idea, such as writing short answer-first passages, and apply it to a single page.

Measure the clicks in Search Console after four weeks before you roll it out further.

Step 5: Keep a human check

Agents write fast, and they can also be confidently wrong.

Every page my system publishes gets read by a person first, and I'd keep that rule on any site you care about.

How To Pick Who To Follow Or Hire This Year

Following is free, and hiring costs money, so the bar is different for each.

For following, pick people who publish dated work with their method explained.

For hiring, I'd ask five questions before paying anyone.

  • I'd ask what they published or shipped in the last twelve months, because the playbook from 2023 is already out of date.
  • I'd ask for case studies with a start date, an end date and real numbers.
  • I'd ask how they handle AI Overviews and AI Mode, and how they measure visibility there.
  • I'd ask exactly where links come from and who checks the content.
  • I'd ask to start with one small project that we can both measure.

A good professional answers all five without getting defensive.

If you want a one-to-one advisor, my guide to the best SEO consultant covers that decision.

If you want the career-long ranking instead of this 2026 one, read my list of the best SEO professionals.

If you'd rather pick by speciality, such as local or technical SEO, read my guide to the top SEO experts.

Where To Go Next If You Want My Help

I've got a few routes, and the right one depends on where you are today.

FAQ: Top SEO Professionals 2026

Who are the top SEO professionals in 2026?

My ranking is Julian Goldie, Mike King, Kevin Indig, Rand Fishkin, Glenn Gabe, Barry Schwartz, Dan Petrovic, Britney Muller and Crystal Carter.

It's my own list and I put myself first, so please check the dated sources for each person.

How is this list different from a normal best SEO professionals list?

A normal list ranks people on their whole career.

This list only counts work from 2025 and 2026, and each entry has a date and a source.

What changed in SEO in 2026?

AI Overviews and AI Mode now answer many searches directly.

Google also ran spam updates in March, June, August and September, and AI visibility is now measured across many answers instead of one position.

Should I follow or hire an SEO professional in 2026?

I'd follow two or three researchers for free so you understand what is changing.

I'd only hire someone who can show dated case studies in your niche and who will start with a small project.
