Claude AI GEO is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside the answers Claude gives, so that when someone asks Anthropic's assistant who's best in your niche, your name is in the reply.
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, and this is that same idea pointed at one specific assistant.
Ask Claude who's best at what you do, and if it isn't your name, that recommendation is going to whoever it does say.
This page is the operator walkthrough, so every section is a step you can run this week.
I'll start with how Claude actually finds its answers, because the steps only make sense once you know that.
Nobody can guarantee what Claude says, and that includes me, but you can control what it finds when it looks.
If you'd like my team to check where you stand first, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
Claude AI GEO At A Glance
This is the full walkthrough on one screen, with the reason each step matters for Claude in particular.
| Step | What you do | Why it matters for Claude |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run a baseline of 20 to 30 buyer questions in Claude with web search on. | You see who Claude names today and which pages it cites. |
| 2 | Check robots.txt for ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot. | Blocking the search and user bots can cut your visibility. |
| 3 | Remove noindex from pages you want cited. | Anthropic says noindex keeps pages out of Claude's web search results. |
| 4 | Publish case-study pages that answer each question. | Claude can only cite what exists and says something specific. |
| 5 | Get the same facts about you onto other trusted sites. | Answers lean on what several sources agree about. |
| 6 | Shape pages so the answer sits in the first two lines. | A clear answer is easier to lift and cite. |
| 7 | Publish first when a new topic appears in your niche. | Early pages are often the only good answer available. |
| 8 | Re-run the same questions weekly and log the citations. | Claude shows its sources, so you can measure progress. |

How Claude Finds The Answers It Gives
Claude is the AI assistant made by Anthropic.
It can answer from two places, which are what it learned during training and what it finds live with web search.
Anthropic's help centre says that when a question benefits from current information, Claude uses a search tool.
You can turn web search on from the "+" menu in a chat, and adding "Search the web" to a prompt helps make sure it searches.
The same help centre says every web search response includes citations, so you can check the sources yourself.
Anthropic also explains that its web search uses search partners that index web content.
That detail matters, because it means your pages need to be indexed and reachable before Claude can find them in a search.
For the training side, Anthropic says ClaudeBot collects web content that could potentially contribute to training its models.
So Claude AI GEO has a fast lane, which is live search with citations, and a slow lane, which is what ends up in future training data.
This guide focuses mainly on the fast lane, because that's the part you can test and measure today.
Step 1: Run A Baseline Of Buyer Questions
Before you change anything, find out what Claude says right now.
Write down 20 to 30 questions a real buyer would ask, such as "who is the best [service] in [city]" or "what's the best [tool] for [job]".
Open Claude, turn web search on and ask each question in a fresh chat.
Log three things for every question, which are whether you're named, which pages are cited and whether the description of you is accurate.
This is the same idea I describe in my Claude SEO agency guide, where the measurement is literally re-asking the AIs every week.
Save the log, because it's your before picture.
Step 2: Check Your Robots.txt For Anthropic's Bots
Anthropic lists three bots in its help article on how site owners can control its crawler.
| Bot | What Anthropic says it does | What Anthropic says blocking it does |
|---|---|---|
| ClaudeBot | It collects web content that could contribute to training Anthropic's models. | It signals that your future material should be excluded from training data. |
| Claude-User | It fetches pages when a person asks Claude a question. | It may reduce your visibility for user-directed web search. |
| Claude-SearchBot | It navigates the web to improve the quality of search results. | It may reduce your visibility and accuracy in user search results. |
Open your robots.txt file and check that Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot aren't disallowed if you want to be cited.
Whether you allow ClaudeBot is a separate decision about training data, and it's yours to make.
Anthropic says you need to add rules for each subdomain you want to control.
It also says blocking its IP addresses may not work reliably, because that stops its bots reading your robots.txt at all.
If crawling load worries you, Anthropic says it supports the Crawl-delay extension in robots.txt.
Anthropic publishes its bot IP list at claude.com/crawling/bots.json, which helps if you need to confirm a visit came from them.

Step 3: Remove Noindex From Pages You Want Cited
Anthropic's page on reporting, blocking and removing content from Claude explains how its web search treats noindex.
It says the noindex robots meta tag tells its partners not to index your content, so they don't send it to Claude for web search queries.
Pages with noindex won't appear in Claude's web search outputs, even though people can still reach them through links.
The same page says password-protected content also stays out of web-search-based outputs.
So check your key service pages, case studies and guides, and make sure none of them carries a stray noindex tag.
This is a common mistake on staging copies that get pushed live.
Step 4: Be The Source With Case-Study Pages
Claude can only cite pages that exist and say something worth citing.
My first GEO move is to be the source, which means every page carries a real case study, test or result.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran, so your page becomes the one it has to point to.
In my GEO examples video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and describes me as known for documenting GEO experiments and public testing.
That's a Google example rather than a Claude one, but the principle is the same, because the description came straight from pages that document my real work.
- Take each baseline question where you weren't named.
- Write down one real job, test or result that answers it.
- Publish one page per question with that case study in the first screen.
- Describe your business and specialism in the same plain words on every page.

Step 5: Be Everywhere With Consistent Mentions
AI answers lean on what several sources agree about.
I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages say the same name, the AI repeats it.
My second move is to be everywhere, which means several sites and platforms pointing to the same answer from different angles.
In my examples, the AI answer for "who is the best Hermes AI SEO expert" recommends me and cites my content from several platforms.
For Claude AI GEO, the practical version looks like this.
- Your name, services and location should read the same on your site, directories, partner pages and social profiles.
- Articles, interviews and comparisons on other sites should describe you with the same facts.
- Every claim on those pages should be true, because a wrong fact repeated everywhere is still wrong.
Here's another video where I walk through the AI SEO system behind those examples.
Step 6: Shape Pages So The Answer Is Easy To Lift
When an AI answers, it names the sources it used, so make your page easy to use.
Put the direct answer to the question in the first two lines.
Add an FAQ where each answer lands in the first sentence and stays short.
Use clear headings that match the questions buyers actually ask.
In my Claude AI SEO guide I explain why clean question-and-answer blocks help a page get picked for AI answers.
Anthropic doesn't publish a list of ranking factors for Claude, so I treat this as good practice rather than a secret switch.
Step 7: Be First On New Topics
My third move is to be first, which means publishing within 24 hours of a topic appearing.
When Jev AI dropped, I published on searches like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" that same weekend.
When Claude searches the web for something brand new, a good early page is often one of the few answers it can find.
Speed doesn't excuse mistakes, though.
Google's 1 October 2026 update to its page on using generative AI content says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.
That's good advice for Claude AI GEO too, because a fast page with wrong facts gets wrong facts cited.

Step 8: Measure Claude's Citations Every Week
Re-run your baseline questions every week in fresh chats with web search on.
Log whether you're named, which pages are cited and whether the description is accurate.
Compare it to last week's log and note what changed.
| Question | Named? | Pages Claude cited | Accurate? | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best [service] in [city] | No | Two directories and a competitor's guide | Not applicable | Get listed accurately on both directories. |
| Best [tool] for [job] | Yes, third | My comparison page | Yes | Add a fresher case study to the page. |
| Who is the best [specialist] | Yes, first | My case study and a podcast page | Partly | Fix the outdated fact on the podcast page. |
The rows above are a template to copy, not results from my own tracking.
Answers vary between chats, so look for trends across weeks rather than reacting to one reply.
What My Own Screens Show And Don't Show
I want to be precise about my proof here.
In my videos, my content appears in Google's AI answers for "best geo expert", AI Mode lists me first for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and Perplexity also lists me among GEO experts.
One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day.
None of those screens is a Claude answer, so I'm not claiming Claude says the same thing.
I'm sharing them because Claude's web search also works from indexed pages, so the same groundwork gives it something to find.
Limits Of Claude AI GEO
- Nobody can guarantee what Claude says, and answers can vary between chats.
- Anthropic doesn't publish ranking factors, so treat every tactic as a test.
- Answers built from training data change slowly, because they depend on future model releases.
- Blocking Anthropic's bots reduces visibility, but allowing them doesn't promise citations.
- Wrong facts about you on other sites can get repeated, so fix them at the source.
