Generative engine optimization vs AIO is mostly a naming question, because people use AIO in two different ways.
If AIO means "AI optimisation", it's a broad umbrella that overlaps almost completely with GEO, and if AIO means Google AI Overviews, then optimising for AIO is one slice of GEO.
Either way the work is the same, because Google says AI Overviews have no extra requirements beyond solid SEO, and GEO adds the habits that get you named across every AI tool.
Below you'll get a table that untangles the terms, then five operator steps that cover both meanings at once.
If you'd like my team to check your site against both, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
Generative Engine Optimization vs AIO At A Glance
This table puts GEO next to both meanings of AIO, so you can see where they overlap.
| GEO | AIO as "AI optimisation" | AIO as "AI Overviews" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it stands for | Generative engine optimisation. | AI optimisation, a broad marketing term. | Google AI Overviews, the AI summary in Google Search. |
| Where the term comes from | A 2023 research paper on arXiv. | Industry usage, with no single official definition. | Shorthand for Google's AI Overviews feature. |
| What it covers | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. | Roughly the same AI search and assistant tools. | One Google feature only. |
| The goal | Get your business named or cited in AI answers. | Get your business seen in AI answers. | Get your page shown as a supporting link in an AI Overview. |
| Official guidance | The GEO paper defines the term, and no AI company owns it. | None, because it isn't one company's term. | Google's AI features page, which says there are no extra requirements. |
| How it relates to GEO | It's the subject itself. | Nearly a synonym for GEO. | A subset of GEO for one engine. |
The practical takeaway is to ask which AIO someone means before you plan any work.

What GEO Means
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.
The term comes from a 2023 paper called GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers, accepted to KDD 2024.
The paper describes generative engines as tools that gather information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
In plain words, GEO is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT a question.
What AIO Means: The Two Uses
AIO as "AI optimisation"
Some people use AIO to mean AI optimisation, which is a broad label for making your brand show up in AI search tools and assistants.
Used this way, it's very close to GEO, and I'd treat the two as the same job with different names.
There's no single official definition, so different agencies draw the line in different places.
AIO as Google AI Overviews
Other people use AIO as shorthand for Google AI Overviews, the AI-written summary that appears at the top of some Google searches.
Used this way, "optimising for AIO" means trying to get your page shown as a source inside an AI Overview.
That's one engine among several, so it's a slice of GEO rather than a rival to it.
Step 1: Decide Which AIO You're Working On
The first operator step is boring but it saves wasted work.
If a client, a boss or an agency says "AIO", ask whether they mean all AI tools or Google's AI Overviews specifically.
If they mean all AI tools, plan it as GEO.
If they mean Google's AI Overviews, follow Google's own documentation first, then add GEO habits for the other tools.
I'd write the answer down at the top of the project brief so nobody argues about it later.
Step 2: Pass Google's AI Overviews Checklist
Google's AI features and your website page is the official source for this step.
It says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations needed.
To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.
Here's the checklist I'd run, using the best practices Google lists.
- Allow crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN or hosting setup.
- Make your content easy to find through internal links.
- Give users a great page experience.
- Put important content in text form.
- Support the text with high-quality images and videos where they help.
- Make sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page.
- Keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date if you use them.
Google also says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup.
So if someone sells you an "AIO file" for Google, you can skip it.
How Google's AI Overviews Actually Pick Pages
This is the part that explains why the checklist is so plain.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, which means running several related searches across subtopics to build a response.
That lets them show a wider set of supporting links than a classic results page.
Google also says AI Overviews only show when its systems decide they add something to classic Search, so they often don't trigger at all.
It adds that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ.
The AI still reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages say the same name, the AI repeats that name.

Step 3: Make Every Key Page Worth Citing
Passing the checklist makes you eligible, but it doesn't make you the answer.
This is where GEO habits come in, and they help with AI Overviews and every other AI tool at the same time.
Every page I publish has a real case study, meaning something I tested and a real result.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran, so that page becomes the source it has to cite.
I call this move be the source.
The GEO paper points the same way, because its best methods were adding citations, quotations and statistics, while keyword stuffing performed poorly.
Here's how I'd shape one page.
- Answer the question in the first two lines.
- Add one real case study with real numbers.
- Back the key claims with sources, quotes or statistics.
- Describe your business in the same words you use everywhere else.
- Fact-check every line by hand before publishing.
That last step follows Google's page on using generative AI content, updated on 1 October 2026, which says it's "critical" to manually review AI-generated content, including titles, descriptions, structured data and alt text.

Step 4: Cover The Other AI Tools Too
If AIO means only Google's AI Overviews, step four is what turns it into full GEO.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude don't all read the same pages, so I don't rely on one site.
I run multiple websites, each with a different angle, all pointing to the same answer.
That's how I can show up two to four times on page one for one search, and my subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.
I call this move be everywhere.
I also publish within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped, and I call that move be first.
Together, those three moves are my answer engine.
Step 5: Measure And Control
Measuring AI Overviews
Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the normal Search Console totals, in the Performance report under the "Web" search type.
There's no separate AI Overviews report, so you can't split that traffic out inside Search Console.
Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people more likely to spend more time on the site.
Measuring the rest of GEO
For the other AI tools, I keep a weekly log of the same buyer questions.
I record who the answer names, which links it cites and whether it describes me accurately.
In my latest video I point out that Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet, which is why the log matters.
Controlling what Google shows
Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are how you control crawling for Search, including its AI features.
To limit what shows from a page, Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
It also mentions Google-Extended for limiting training and grounding in some of Google's other AI systems.
I'd only use those controls on purpose, because blocking snippets can also block you from appearing as a supporting link.

What This Looks Like On My Screens
In my GEO video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
The AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency ranks first organically too.
In my latest video, AI Mode lists me first when asked for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and on my screen I say it runs Gemini 4 Argon.
Perplexity lists me among GEO experts as well, even though I don't really use Perplexity.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features on one day.
These are my results from my own screens, one of my sites flopped, and nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.
The Free Workflow Behind It
In my latest video I show the workflow on free tools.
I export Google Search Console data to a CSV and give it to Hermes Agent, which is free and open source, with OpenCode as the free brain.
I ask it to analyse what's working and suggest topics to rank inside AI search engines.
Then I give it my SEO skill, a roughly 100-point checklist that writes from a case-study angle, and let it publish after I've checked the drafts.

My Verdict On Generative Engine Optimization vs AIO
If AIO means AI optimisation, it's GEO with a different label.
If AIO means Google AI Overviews, it's one engine inside GEO, and Google says it needs nothing beyond good SEO.
Run the five steps above and you've covered both meanings without paying twice.

What does AIO stand for in SEO?
People use AIO for two things, either AI optimisation as a broad term or Google AI Overviews as a shorthand.
It isn't one company's official term, so always ask which meaning someone has in mind.
Do I need special optimisation for Google AI Overviews?
No, Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the usual SEO best practices apply.
